A Professional Framework Built on Communication
The Caring Human Code® is Nordic Dog Trainer’s original framework for understanding and working with dogs.
It combines Scandinavian values of respect, equality and responsibility with a deep understanding of canine communication.
Since 2012, Nordic Dog Trainer has taught thousands of dog guardians and professionals from more than 60 countries.
Through many years of teaching and practical work, this knowledge has developed into a structured framework focused on:

Rather than starting with techniques, the framework begins with understanding the dog as a communicating, feeling individual.
Rooted in the Original Calming Signals
At the core of this framework lies the understanding of calming signals, first identified by the Norwegian trainer Turid Rugaas.
Her internationally influential book On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals has helped shape global understanding of canine communication for more than 30 years.
In this course, calming signals are taught as a complete communication system, not as a simplified checklist.

The course also includes a special lecture by Turid Rugaas, explaining calming signals from the original source.

Do I need to have my own dog?
No. You do not need to own a dog to complete the Foundation PRO Course. However, you will need access to dogs for some of the observation and practical assignments.
These can be dogs you work with, care for, walk, foster, or otherwise spend time with. Some assignments involve observing the same dog in different situations or interacting directly with a dog, but it does not need to be your own.
The Nordic Dog Trainer Shelter Support Initiative
– Shelter workers €300 compensation
Around the world, thousands of people work and volunteer in dog shelters, caring for dogs who may arrive frightened, stressed, or struggling to adapt after difficult experiences.
We believe that a deeper understanding of canine communication, emotional safety and behaviour can make a real difference for dogs living in shelters. And we would like the knowledge you gain through the course to reach beyond your own learning and benefit other people and dogs at your shelter too.
That is why we created the Nordic Dog Trainer Shelter Support Initiative as part of the Foundation PRO Course.
How the Shelter Support Initiative Works
If you work or volunteer at a dog shelter, you can receive a €/$300 refund of your course fee after successfully completing CHC® Foundation PRO.
There is no separate application when you enrol. You simply register for Foundation PRO as normal.
To receive the refund, you must:
- complete the course and all 6 mandatory assignments
- within 9 months after the course ends, share some of what you have learned with colleagues or other volunteers at your shelter
- send us a short explanation of what you did, together with some form of documentation
What can I do at my shelter?
There is no single required activity. You can choose something that is useful and realistic for your particular shelter.
For example, you could:
- hold a short session or discussion with colleagues or volunteers
- demonstrate something you have learned in practice
- give a short presentation
- create and share a handout or other educational material
- organise another activity that helps share your new knowledge with others at the shelter
You do not need to decide what you will do before starting the course.
What documentation do I need to provide?
This will depend on what you choose to do. It could be photos, presentation slides, copies of materials you created or shared, or other relevant documentation, together with a short explanation of what you did.
Once you have completed the requirements and your documentation has been approved, we will refund €/$300 of your course fee.
This means that after successfully completing the course and the Shelter Support Initiative, your final cost for CHC® Foundation PRO is only €497.

Shelter environments can be challenging places for dogs. Many dogs experience high levels of stress, unfamiliar surroundings, and limited opportunities to communicate their needs clearly.

The Professional Track is designed as a structured learning process that combines theory with observation and reflection.

How the Course Works
Module 1 opens on November 10, with the pre-recorded lessons and learning materials. A new module then opens every second Tuesday.
On the Tuesdays in between, we meet for a live Q&A at 19:00 CET to discuss the module and answer your questions. All live Q&A’s will be recorded for your convenience.
Assignments are designed to help you develop:
- observation skills
- deeper understanding of communication signals
- ethical decision-making in real situations
This structured coursework ensures that the knowledge is not only understood intellectually, but integrated into professional practice.
Mandatory Coursework
Assignments play a central role in the Professional Track.
Throughout the course you will complete 6 structured homework assignments connected to the modules.
These assignments involve:
- observing dogs in real-life situations
- analysing communication signals
- reflecting on emotional and environmental influences
- applying the Caring Human Code® framework
The assignments are designed to strengthen your ability to observe and interpret behaviour — one of the most important professional skills when working with dogs.
A Required Foundation for Professional Certification
The Foundation Course Professional Track is also the prerequisite for Nordic Dog Trainer Professional Certification programs.
Everyone who wish to continue into advanced training or certification with Nordic Do Trainer must complete this foundation first.
This ensures that all professionals entering the certification pathway share a common framework of communication, ethics and observation.
